Many of you know that my husband was in the hospital recently. Well, he came back home this past week. He has begun doing a new kind of kidney dialysis (透析).
The kind of dialysis that I knew about before, called hemodialysis (血液透析) is the kind where you go to the hospital about 3 times a week, and stay for a few hours each time. You are connected to a dialysis machine which cleans your blood, because your kidneys have become too weak and damaged to do it.
My husband’s kidneys have begun to fail, and he began a kind of dialysis called peritoneal dialysis (腹膜透析).
During peritoneal dialysis, a cleansing fluid (液体) flows through a tube into part of the stomach area, also called the abdomen. The inner lining of the abdomen, known as the peritoneum (腹膜), acts as a filter and removes wastes from blood. After a set amount of time, the fluid with the filtered waste flows out of the abdomen and is thrown away.
The hospital told my husband that there are only 20 people in Oita City who are doing this type of dialysis now, but they are hoping that more and more people can do it. It is considered more gentle on the body than the usual kind of kidney dialysis.
So, we have begun a new chapter in our marriage. My husband has begun a new chapter in his life.
